What's the Difference Between a Bay Window and a Bow Window?
Although Bay windows and Bow windows are often grouped together, there are some differences between the two which can impact the look, feel, and functionality of your home.
Bay Windows
A Bay Window is a type of window that sticks out of the wall from the property, with a brick wall below to support the weight of the window. They typically have 3 sides and appear to be more box-like with 1 large central window, and 2 smaller angled windows.
Bay Window Benefits
Bay windows are suited to Victorian and Edwardian homes, giving the house a more traditional look from the outside. Bay windows also allow a better view from within your home, let in more light than any regular single window, and the main benefit is that they give you extra space within your home.
Bow Windows
Similarly to Bay windows, Bow Windows also perch out from the wall of the property, except Bow windows have a semi circle configuration. They have at least 4 sides which stick out of the property in a curved look. Although Bow windows typically have 4 or 5 sides, there's no limit to how many sides a Bow window can have, with some larger properties having up to 10 sides.
Bow Window Benefits
Just like Bay Windows, Bow windows offer the benefit of increasing the amount of space in your home, allowing more natural light in, and better views from within your home. One of the main benefits of Bow windows is that it's a lot easier to convert regular flat windows into a bow window, as the brickwork underneath bow windows is flat. This means the conversion doesn't require structural work, or planning permission, making it a lot cheaper.
