The basic specification is intended for applications where enhanced thermal performance or a particular window energy rating is not required. For installations where energy efficiency is a priority, compare this product with EasyFit’s 4mm argon-filled A-rated and C-rated double glazed units.

What does a 4mm double glazed unit mean?
A 4mm double glazed unit uses 4mm-thick glass for both its inner and outer panes. The panes are separated by a spacer cavity and sealed together as one unit.
The overall thickness is therefore greater than 8mm because it also includes the cavity between the two panes.
For example:
- 4-6-4 means 4mm glass, a 6mm cavity and 4mm glass.
- 4-12-4 means 4mm glass, a 12mm cavity and 4mm glass.
- 4-16-4 means 4mm glass, a 16mm cavity and 4mm glass.
- 4-20-4 means 4mm glass, a 20mm cavity and 4mm glass.
A 4-16-4 specification has an overall nominal thickness of 24mm.
The correct build-up must be compatible with the space available within the existing frame. Do not assume that a thicker unit will fit without checking the current glass and frame specification.

Where can a basic 4mm sealed unit be used?
This product may be suitable for replacing a standard double glazed unit where:
- The required unit uses two panes of 4mm glass.
- The existing frame remains in serviceable condition.
- The selected overall thickness matches the glazing system.
- Enhanced thermal performance is not the principal requirement.
- The glass dimensions fall within the permitted 4mm limits.
- The selected glass type is appropriate for the installation location.
Potential applications include replacement glazing in windows, doors and other suitable framed openings. However, the correct specification depends on the frame, glass dimensions, installation position and applicable safety requirements.
If the unit is being installed in a door, near floor level or in another safety-critical location, toughened or other appropriate safety glass may be required. Ask a competent installer or EasyFit for advice if you are unsure.
When should I choose an energy-efficient unit instead?
The basic unit uses standard float glass and a standard spacer bar. It should not be selected solely because it is the lowest-priced option if thermal performance is important.
Consider an argon-filled A-rated or C-rated product when:
- The unit will be fitted into an energy-rated window.
- Reducing heat transfer is an important objective.
- The existing glass uses energy-efficient or Low-E glazing.
- You are upgrading rather than simply matching a basic specification.
- The window specification requires an argon-filled cavity or thermal spacer.
EasyFit offers separate 4mm A-rated and C-rated units for these requirements.

Customise your 4mm double glazed unit
The configurator allows you to tailor the unit to your opening and design requirements.
Unit build-up
Select the total unit thickness required by the frame. This determines the size of the cavity between the two 4mm panes.
The replacement unit should normally match the build-up supported by the existing glazing system. Ordering the wrong thickness may prevent the unit from fitting securely within the frame.
Clear or patterned glass
Choose clear glass or one of the available obscure patterned-glass designs.
Patterned glass can provide additional privacy for locations such as bathrooms, entrance areas, overlooked windows, utility rooms, and side windows and door panels.
Check the appearance and privacy level of the selected pattern before ordering.
Toughened glass
A toughened-glass option is available through the configurator. Toughened glass is designed to behave more safely if broken and may be required in certain locations.
The appropriate safety-glass specification depends on the position, dimensions and purpose of the glazing. If you are unsure, seek professional advice before completing the order.
Decorative details and spacer colour
Decorative options include selected Georgian bars, cottage bars and leading designs. These can help the replacement unit match other glazing within the property.
Check the orientation, colour and design carefully, particularly when matching an existing window or replacing only one unit within a larger arrangement.
Selected spacer-bar colours are available to help coordinate the edge of the sealed unit with the window frame and surrounding glazing.
How to measure your replacement sealed unit
A made-to-measure double glazed unit must be ordered using the full manufacturing dimensions—not simply the area of glass visible through the frame.
You will normally need to confirm:
- The complete width in millimetres.
- The complete height in millimetres.
- The overall unit thickness.
- The thickness of each pane.
- The required glass pattern.
- Whether toughened glass is needed.
- Any decorative bars or leading.
- The required spacer-bar colour.
The most reliable approach is normally to establish the specification of the existing sealed unit after it has been safely removed. Part of the glass is retained inside the frame, so measuring only the visible area may produce an incorrect size.
Measure the width and height at multiple points where appropriate and do not assume that the opening is perfectly square.
Because the unit is manufactured to the measurements submitted, check every dimension and option carefully before placing the order. If you cannot confidently establish the correct specification, ask a competent glazier to measure the unit.

Frequently asked questions
What is a 4mm basic double glazed unit?
A 4mm basic double glazed unit consists of two panes of 4mm float glass separated by a spacer cavity and sealed together. It does not use the same energy-efficient specification as EasyFit’s argon-filled A-rated or C-rated units.
Is the complete unit only 4mm thick?
No. Each pane is 4mm thick. The overall unit also includes the cavity between the panes. For example, a 4-16-4 unit has an overall nominal thickness of 24mm.
Is this product argon-filled?
The basic 4mm product is described as two panes of float glass with a standard spacer bar. It is not specified as argon-filled. Choose one of EasyFit’s separate argon A-rated or C-rated products if an argon-filled unit is required.
Can this unit replace misted double glazing?
Yes, it may be suitable where the existing frame remains in good condition and the original glass specification is compatible with this product. You must order the correct width, height, build-up and glass options.
Can I replace only the glass unit?
In many cases, the sealed glass unit can be replaced without replacing the complete window. This depends on the condition of the frame, seals, glazing beads and other components.
How do I know which unit thickness to choose?
The replacement unit must be compatible with the frame’s glazing system. Check the overall thickness of the existing sealed unit or obtain advice from an experienced glazier. Do not select a build-up based only on the visible gap between the panes.
Do I need toughened glass?
That depends on the unit’s location, dimensions and intended use. Safety glass may be required in doors, low-level glazing and other critical locations. Seek professional advice if you are uncertain.
Should I choose 4mm or 6mm glass?
A 4mm unit is suitable only where its dimensions and application permit. EasyFit states that a 6mm specification is required where both dimensions exceed 1,300mm. Contact EasyFit for confirmation if the unit is large or the appropriate thickness is unclear.
Can I order patterned glass?
Yes. The configurator includes clear glass and a selection of obscure patterned-glass options. Pattern availability and pricing are displayed when configuring the product.
How long will my 4mm double glazed unit take?
EasyFit currently estimates within 14 working days for glazing. Bespoke details such as leading or Georgian bars may extend the manufacturing time, and delivery timing can vary by location.
Check your measurements before ordering
Every 4mm double glazed unit is manufactured to the dimensions and options submitted. Please check the width, height, overall build-up, glass type and decorative details carefully before adding the product to your basket.
